Tuo Ming

In the first year of Tonzhi when Shanxi Muslims rose in revolt, there was a cheif of the adherents named Tuo Ming, ahong [[i.e akhund]. He was in dire poverty and had no regular job, but, since he knew a little bit of Chinese wriitng he praciced sorcery and fortuen telling, wandering around the Jini[bao]], Henan and Gansu ares, and got acquainted with various Muslim leaders. Taking advantage of the rebellion (in Shanxi), he went out of the Pass by way of Xining and arrived in Urumchi. Living in the house of Suo Huanzhang, lieutenant-colonel, he deluded many Muslims by practicing divination. More and more people began to follow him [1]
