Safar 20 is observed by Shia Muslims as the day of Arba-e’en the 40th day after martyrdom of Imam Husayn, his friends and relatives in Karbala on Muharram 10.

• 18^th February 901 (20^th Safar 288) - Thabit ibn Qurra, Arab astronomer and mathematician
• 4^th March 1193 (20^th Safar 589) Saladin dies at Damascus. When his treasury is opened it is found that is not enough money to pay for his funeral; he had given most of his money away in charity.
