Surah (Arabic: سورة sūra, plural سور suwar), literally "fence" or "row", refers to one of the 114 chapters of the Qur'an. Each surah begins with the basmalah (In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), and consists of ayat (verses of the Qur'an, sing. ayah). In general, the longer suwar are located towards the beginning of the Qur'an, while the shorter ones tend to come towards the end. Each surah can be classified as being either revealed in Medina or in Mecca.
