King Abdullah Economic City (Arabic:مدينة الملك عبدالله اللإقتصادية) is a multi-billion economic project revealed in 2005 in Saudi Arabia. This future city will be located along the Red Sea, around 50km north of Jeddah. The proposed city would be fairly small (55 km²), 35km in length. But it will have huge buildings and high skyscrapers that would be an important landmark in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. The project cost is about 100 Billion SAR = $26 Billion USD

The King Abdullah Economic City will be a multi-stage development with construction beginning on Wednesday, 21 December, 2005. This mega project will closely integrate itself into the Kingdom’s on-going drive to expand the economy, create employment opportunities for its youthful population and function as a catalyst to attract foreign investment, global trade, commerce and industry. Based on initial forecasts, the project and its several components will create up to 500,000 employment opportunities in the various industries and service-oriented companies that will open in the City.

The Financial Island is designed to be an international home to the assists of the world's biggest financial institutions. The Island will offer 500,000 square metres of office space for the leading international and regional financial entities, business hotels and a new exhibition and convention centre. Up to 60,000 professionals are to operate from the Financial Island on a daily basis.

Financial Island will be topped by two towers reaching up to 100 and 60 storeys that offer compelling views of the surrounding city skyline.

The Industrial District will cover 8 million square metres, and is exclusive to the requirements of a range of manufacturers small, medium and large scale industry. They will represent sectors such as downstream petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, research and development activities as well as a host of educational institutions that will prepare young Saudis for the jobs that the city will bring in. A sizeable area has also been set aside to develop accommodation for employees and their families.

The residential area will include three large neighborhoods that would cover more then half of the city. This area would include residential, commercial, and recreational areas. The area would not only be home for around half a million residents, but also would be enough for thousands of tourists. Each of the three districts would feature their own public amentias, such as Mosques, shops and recreational venues.

This district would be in the center of the city, it would include:

  • Medium Density, mid-rise buildings
  • Iconic Grand Mosque
  • Traditional Souks and modern shopping centers

  • A marina housing a yacht club

The Resort Zone will draw both local and international tourist spots, with world-class service, the resort will redefine levels of comfort, relaxation and recreation. Set to become a Major destination of the map of Saudi Arabia and the map of the Middle East as a whole, the Resort will include hotels, shopping centers and other recreational facilities, all built along the pristine part of the Red Sea coastline.

Among the tourist draws at the Resort a championship-standard 18-hole golf course, complete with training facilities and driving range. Adding to the Resort will be an equestrian club, yacht club and an exciting range of water sports that will take full advantage of the Red Sea’s unspoiled beaches.

The Sea Port is planned to be located away from the city. It will be an excellent link between the Kingdom and the rest of the world, and an additional link between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Spread across 2.5 million square meters, the port will boast the most sophisticated and advance craning systems, as well as state-of-the-art GIS & GPS data management networks, to effectively and efficiently guide development and maintenance, and ensure timely movement of port operations. A major high point of this port will be its capacity to receive the world’s largest “mega-vessels”. It will possess the capacity to handle millions of TEU’s each year and capability to moor mega-vessels.
