Ibrāhīm (Arabic: إبراهيم, known as Abraham in the Bible) is an important prophet and messenger of Islam. He is known in Islam as khalīlullah — "the friend of God", in reference to the statement in the Qur'an, "Allah took Ibrahim as a friend" (004:125). Similarly to the rest of the prophets that came after him, Ibrahim preached monotheism to his people.
Ibrahim was raised in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia. He was the father of two sons, Ismail إسماعيل (Biblical Ishmael) and Is'haq إسحاق (Biblical Isaac). He bore Ismail from Hagar, and Is'haq from Sarah.
Upon the commandment of Allah
Ibrahim took Hagar and Ismail to Mecca and left them with some water and dates. After some time when the provisions had run out Hagar in desperation ran from the top of the nearby hill Safar to the top of the adjacent hill Mawar looking for people. Eventually Allah gave Hagar the underground spring of Zam Zam. This event formed the basis of the Hajj rites.
Ibrahim then returned to Mecca sometime later and along with Ismail built the Ka'ba
Acording to Genesis Ibrahim was originally called Abram. {{cquote|No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraha; for I have made your the ancestor of a multitude of nations [1]. However this is inconsistent with the meaning of "Ancestor of a Multitude of Nations, which would be Abhamon.

[edit] Lineage
The Qur'an states that Ibrahim is the son of Azar (006:074). This differs from the account recorded in the Old Testament, which gives a long list of ancestors Abraham the son of Terah, Nahor,Serug,Reu,Peleg,Eber,Shelah,Cainan,Arphaxad,Shem,Noah [2] It is interesting to note that these names are closely releated to towns close to Harran in south eastern Turkey, the area from which Ibrahim migrated to Palestine acording to Genesis [3]. For example Nahor - Nahor, Terah - Til Turakhi, Serug - Sarugi and Peleg - Phaliga. Which suggests tribal names.
