The five Ma where Hui Chinese Muslims who together formed the ruling elite of the Northern provinces between 1910 and 1949. The provinces comprised Qinghai, Gansu and Ningxia The five ma where Ma Bufang, Ma Jiyuan, Ma Hongkui, Ma Hongbin and Ma Fuxiang. Within the five ma where the three rulers, who were known as the xibei san ma (Three Ma's of the northwest) Ma Bufang, Ma Hongkui, Ma Hongbin, ruling Qinghai,Gansu and Ningxia respectively. The three areas where known collectively as the sultanate of three horses and had a common foreign policy, although each territory had full self government.
There have been several sultanates in what is now know as china proper they include
- Sultanate of Xieng Hong,
- Sultanate of Yunnan or Ta Li (1857-73)
- Sultanate of Kweichow
