Dongxiang

The Dongxiang derives its name from the old prefecture of Hezhou, (Linxia), i.e east township, where they were concentrated.

It is said that the descendents of the Dongxiang are from Mongolian Muslims who came to Linxia, Gansu during the 13th century, posted as garrison troops by Genghis Khan.
During the Ming Dynasty the Dongxiang were offered amnesty and the permantly settled in the Dongxiang region.
The Dongxiang Autonomous County was founded in 1950 CE (1369 AH)

Many of the Dongxiang, although not versed in Mandarin, they are literate in Arabic in order to read the Qu'ran.
There language belongs to the Altaic language family and is closely related to Mongolian.

The Dongxiang are Muslims but are spread out in ther adherence to the various groups of Islam in China, from the Liao Jiao, to the Xin Jiao and the Xin Xin Jiao
