Ar-Raheem : The MERCIFUL ONE

The article "AL" meaning "the" defines the word raheem which means merciful to form one of the glorious attributive names of Allah (SWT), Al-Raheem pronounced Ar-Raheem. This glorious name connotes the unlimited capacity for granting mercy and compassion. Anyone may be described as raheem, but only Allah (SWT) may be addressed as Ar-Raheem.

The name Ar-Raheem is found in 34 ayats in the Holy Qur'an in 20 surahs. It is always combined with other attributive names of Allah (SWT). These are: Ar-Rahman, At-Tawaab Al-Ghafoor, Al-Azeez and Al-Bari’u.

Ar-Rahman'O Ar-Raheem. This combination is found in Al-Fatiha, Al Baqarah, An-Naml, Fussilat, and Al-Hashr. IN this context, the name Ar-Raheem has been interpreted to emphasize the unlimited nature of the Mercy that Allah (SWT) extends to His obedient servants in the hereafter. Ibn Jarir states that they mercy of Ar-Rahman is for all the creation in this world, and mercy of ARAHIM is only for the believers in the hereafter.

At-Tawaab O' Ar-Raheem. At-Tawaab is the One who accepts the repentance of His servants. This combination of the two glorious names of Allah (SWT), can be found in surah Al Baqarah, indicates that Allah (SWT) accepts the repentance of those who turn back to Him and repent their transgression. His comprehensive mercy indicated by His name Ar-Rahman allows anybody to repent and His favor of those who do as signified by His name Ar-Raheem assures them that He accepts their repentance regardless of the severity of their transgression.

Al-Ghafoor'O Ar-Raheem. This combination can be found in Surahs: Yunus, Yusuf, Al'Hijr, Al'Qasas, Az'zumor, Ash'Shurah, and Al'Ahqaf. In surah Sabaa, we find Ar-Raheem'O Al-Ghafoor. Here once again, the combination of the glorious name Al-Ghafoor which means the One who forgives with Ar-Raheem indicates that Allah (SWT) favors those who ask for his forgiveness by forgiving them.

Al-Azeez'O Ar-Raheem. Al-^Azeez means the Mighty, the Powerful, The Untouchable. It is found nine times in Surah Ash'Shu'arah and once in each of Ar'rum, As,Sajdah, Yaseen, and Ad'Dukhan. Abu al Aleieh states in his Tafseer of these two names together: Powerful is His punishment and victory over those who disobey Him and The Merciful One for those who repent and submit to Him.

Al-Bari’O Ar-Raheem. This is found in Surah At'Tur. Al'Barr is the One who responds favorably to those who call on Him, those who make Du'a (supplication). The whole Ayat states that "Truly, we did call unto him previously, truly it is He the One who responds favorably, The Merciful One." Here again, the emphasis is that Allah (SWT) by His Mercy responds to those who pray to him and grants them their wishes in His way.

The Prophet (saaw) said that "No one enters Jannah (paradise) by his deeds, they said, not even You oh Messenger of Allah, He replied not even Me except that Allah includes me under His Mercy."

Ar-Rahman extends His mercy to ALL his creation. Those who avail themselves of this great blessing and repent, ask for forgiveness and obey Allah (SWT) receive exclusively The Mercy of Arrahim in the hereafter.
