The act of Abortion is Haram except in certain circumstances. Its permissability is dependent upon various factors such as the term of the foetus, and the circumstances of the conception. The scholars have differed upon the criteria acceptable for an exception Abortion being Haram.

Several fatawas were issued as a result of the large number of Bosnian women who were raped and conceived a child during Bosnian-Serbian War. Scholars ruled that if , the women were to expect abandonment because of the shame of Rape, and if this would lead to risk to her health and life then it would be permissible to abort these children [citation needed] (source and reasoning needed for this)

The doctrine of ensoulment after 120 days was held by the Catholic Church , up until the 19th century, but was de-emphasized as inopportune precisely because it was recognised it would be used to justify abortion [citation needed]
